Fontworks Newsletter | March 2001

Hi there and welcome to another Fontworks newsfeed. It's all go round here at the minute, out with the old and in with the new, and we're not just talkin' type; a swanky new floor has been laid, the decorators are in and FW branded furniture is on its way, though our semi-infamous green sofa, much loved by our travelling typographer, has had a stay of execution and is now located downstairs on our sales floor. Amid the chaos and general clearout we've unearthed some fantastic items from yesteryear (books, posters, font packs) so if you're passing why not pop in and bag a bargain.

So what's new on the type front I hear you cry. Quite a lot actually, so sit back and digest this little lot:

- NEW JUDE FAMILY FROM ALIAS
New from Gareth Hague's Alias foundry, Jude is a new contemporary serif family. A non-referential, non-classical type with a sharp, angular, incised aesthetic suitable for text and display. A sister typeface, Union, a softer, more classical interpretation of the same theme, will be released later this year. Copies of our Alias reference poster are still available through the usual channels!

- RECENT FONTWORKS MAILING
We have just issued our latest mailing which consisted of two gorgeous Font Bureau Retail Booklets (#23 & #24, containing extensive showings of, amongst others, Belizio, Daley's Gothic, Comrade, Spira, Dispatch and new weights of Interstate, Californian and Miller), a Linotype TakeType 3 CD leaflet and a flyer designed by G-Type's Nick Cooke showcasing the 9 new additions to his popular Houschka family. If you'd like copies please contact Sean . Forthcoming promo items should include offerings from Device , Club 21 , T-26 , Lucasfonts and a Fontworks New Releases catalogue featuring the cream of our smaller foundries.

- ACME WEBSITE OVERHAULED
Christian Küsters' ACMEFONTS label, in conjunction with Open Co UK, have re-worked their website recently to stunning effect, producing a wonderfully inventive new interface and a navigational joy. The highly innovative 'live' type sampling feature enables users to visualize and scale any Acme font and all weights can be purchased online through the Fontworks digital retail system. Cutting-edge style for a ground-breaking foundry and a huge leap forward in 'typesite' design.

- NEW DEVICE RELEASES FROM RIAN HUGHES
Type's Mr Prolific, Rian Hughes, has unleashed a whole slew of fresh designs which are exclusive to Fontworks in the UK. The display face guru has produced a serious body text contender too in the shape of Paralucent . Call (+44 (0)20 7490 5390) or email for a free leaflet.

- BITSTREAM LIBRARY SPECIAL OFFER
The last of the line, the fantastic BT Typehigh collection includes tons of ITC Fontek originals as well as many BT classics (over 1400 fonts in total) and we can sell you one for £445 ex VAT! Limited stock so don't miss out on this never to be repeated offer.

- MORONIC VIRUS!
Celebrated graphic designer Jon Barnbrook's type vehicle, Virus, surges back to life with the release of the new & "demonic" sans face Moron and a sexy new website on the way. Says Barnbrook of Moron, "we made an effort to kern all english swearwords properly so any expletives will look exceptionally well crafted in this font."

- TRAVELLING TYPOGRAPHER UPDATE
Neil Macmillan has updated his previous TT overview -what's caught his eye this time?

- SHINNTYPE NEWS
Nick Shinn has released his new post-humanist typeface Alphaville through Fontworks and all ShinnTypes are now available to buy online from us. The busy ex-pat based in Toronto has also updated his old Walbaum News family and re-named it Walburn. Follow the above links for details.
